Prayerful Old Faithful

The Story:     Thanks to the visionaries from 150 years ago, Yellowstone National Park serves as our first national park and the Old Faithful Geyser as the park’s icon. After witnessing the geyser erupt, I realized one of the day’s subsequent eruptions might coincide with sunset. I overlaid the setting sun’s predicted azimuth with the geyser’s base, picked this vantage point, and planned for exposures into the bright sun. As Old Faithful overtook its static pressure point, the initial shots of spray became backlit by the setting sun forming a silhouette in the shape of a lady wearing a Victorian-styled dress.

After witnessing the geyser erupt, I realized one of the day’s subsequent eruptions might coincide with sunset. I overlaid the setting sun’s predicted azimuth with the geyser’s base, picked this vantage point, and planned for exposures into the bright sun. As Old Faithful overtook its static pressure point, the initial shots of spray became backlit by the setting sun. In this moment, some interpret the water as forming a robed figure with hands pressed into a praying position.
