Horseshoe Lake resides in the “American Bottom” (aka American Bottoms), which consists of floodplain lands on the western shore of Illinois.  The curve “horseshoe” lake is a remnant of the meandering Mississippi River which became cut off from the main river channel, thereby forming an oxbow lake.  Today, Horseshoe Lake is an US National Natural Landmark and hosts wildlife which stands in contrast to the development of the St Louis greater metropolitan area.  In this winter sunset, the water normally large water lilies succumbed to early deep freezes, allowing the lake to mirror the colorful sunset above.
