During a snowstorm featuring thundersnow, the red sandstone layers of Garden of the Gods were covered in a blanket of snowSnowy Garden of GodsGarden of the Gods in Colorado Springs is visible demonstration of plate tectonics. These red sandstone layers were deposited horizontally until bent and raised into these vertical positions. On this particular day, the Colorado Springs area experience an early spring snow accompanied by thunderstorms, where white snow contrasted against the red sandstone rocks that geologic forces squeezed to today’s upright position.

Garden of the Gods is a public park and a National Natural Landmark which lies west of Colorado Springs. The deep red sandstones ae part of the Lyons formation and were deposited horizontally before the uplifting force of the Rocky Mountains turned these sandstone layers on edge creating stunning geologic features and amazing vistas.
