The curvy California State Route 1 lies along the Santa Lucia Mountains which rise abruptly from the Pacific Ocean presenting incredible vistas along the road’s frequent turn outs. Big Sur draws its name from “el sur grande”, the big country of the south (of Monterey). The encroaching fog, born from a cold water upwelling, produces a sea fog that eventually makes its climb over the jagged cliffs.
