Frozen Ash Cave, Hocking Hills S.P.

Hocking Hills State Park near Logan Ohio, offers many iconic sights to include Ash Cave. Since the last ice age, a small creek has been eroding the Black Hand Sandstone forming a large recessed cave. A creek flows over the top rock which resists the erosion, creating a waterfall flowing from the top of the dome. On this day, cold temperatures fostered the creation of a ice stalagmite forming on the floor of the sandy cave.

The green hemlocks contrast with the yellow walls of Ash Cave as cold temperatures create ice formations from a creek flowing from over the top of the recessed cave.
