The backlit spray from Old Faithful in this sunset image forms a pareidolia where a Victorian dressed lade appear to rise from the geyserVictorian LadyThanks to the visionaries from 150 years ago, Yellowstone National Park serves as our first national park and the Old Faithful Geyser as the park’s icon. After witnessing the geyser erupt, I realized one of the day’s subsequent eruptions might coincide with sunset. I overlaid the setting sun’s predicted azimuth with the geyser’s base, picked this vantage point, and planned for exposures into the bright sun. As Old Faithful overtook its static pressure point, the initial shots of spray became backlit by the setting sun forming a silhouette in the shape of a lady wearing a Victorian-styled dress.

Yellowstone National Park became the first U.S. National Park and largely lies in Wyoming. It offers many geothermal features in the form of geysers and hot springs. This gallery shares stunning images of Old Faithful eruptions at sunset which the sprays become backlit by the golden light and panoramic moonlit views of Midway Geyser Basin as ghostly vapors rise from the springs.
